Mohammed Suman Miah worked in construction before he died of heart failure, at 34, in Qatar on April 29, 2020. It says on his death certificate that he died of natural causes but there are no specific details.
According to Amnesty International, he went through a medical exam before he traveled to Qatar in 2016, and never complained about his health whatsoever before he died.
The family borrowed $7,000 to pay for the work visa.
The daily temperatures at his job site were around +38C / 100F in the shade. Suman’s colleagues said he had a heart attack toward the end of the workday. He was transported to the hospital but his life could not be saved. No autopsy was made.
To get his body home from the airport, the family had to rent an ambulance. They received $1,165 in lost pay and the Bangladeshi authorities paid $400 for funeral expenses. Three months later they also got $3,500, money they used toward Suman’s loan.
Now the family depends on the oldest son to make ends meet, but the widow is concerned it won’t be enough for her children’s school fees.
